For as long as sentient creatures have walked the lands of Elaphus Tyton, there have been the Angra Mainyu. Sometimes called a spirit or soul, the Angra Mainyu is a member of the opposite species--an owl if you are a deer, a deer if you're an owl--who completes part of you. There is a deep connection between two bonded creatures--it is typically referred to only as "the bond," and entire religions have evolved celebrating this facet of earthly life.
One particular religion focuses on the worship of Cerviformes, part deer, part owl deities and spirits believed to inhabit places of power in the world. Leaders in this form of religion--they can have different regional names--often seek to communicate with the Cerviformes, and encourage their support of the land and those living on it.
And then there is Strega Scura.
Strega Scura was old when many of the gray-beard priests were still seeking their Angra Mainyu. She has lived a long, bitter life, and, having seen what others of her owl-kin will do to save their "spirits," has turned against them. She killed her Angra Mainyu. She is the first of what the believers in the old religion call "the soulless," and what her followers call "the rebels." She gathers followers, encouraging them not to seek out their Angra Mainyu, and to turn away any being with whom they feel that kind of bond.
The question now facing much of the world of Elaphus Tyton is this: will the deer and owl factions of the rebellion band together? And either way, what does their existence mean for the others who live here?
